A Lil’ Q&A with Invalid ID — the Southland producer behind “Heaven” on Undercuts Vol.1, and one of the newest faces in the Aotearoa underground.
Given you’re only brand new to it, what’s your take on the Aotearoa underground scene so far?
“Yes, I’m only very new to the scene. It looks like it has grown so much in a hugely positive way over the past few years that I’ve witnessed it and started to dip my toes in. I’m very excited to get to be a part of it in a more involved way now with my music.”
“I am living in Southland at the moment, and I want to see more of that growth head down this way too!”
Who are your NZ / Aotearoa musical inspirations?
“I have a lot of Kiwi inspirations, but Caru, Hyan and 33below are the big standouts for me at the moment. I was brought up in the countryside with parents that only listened to rock music like AC/DC and Guns N’ Roses — your typical 80s music etc. Channel C4 was the only way I got to hear other music beyond classic kiwi songs like ‘Slice of Heaven’, stuff from The Feelers, Shihad or ‘How Bizarre’ by OMC.”
“This moment and what is happening around NZ in the underground is pretty important to my growth as an artist.”
Now, most importantly, where do you want to take your sound from here?
“I’m still trying to find my sound, overall. There is so much work in every area of my production and the vision I have for my future tracks. I’d love to explore bringing elements of garage into techno. Apparently I need to dive into some 160bpm stuff, as Guzzy is always trying to convince me.”
